More space is more money!

People always look for ways to save money and space. Businesses look for more quantity using less space, saving money on packaging and shipping. In 2001, a farmer in the south western island of Shikoku, Japan, has found a way to make this possible with watermelons! Watermelons has been a big problem for japanese population. It took too much space in their refrigerator and it was a pain to cut since it kept rolling. What the farmer did was make square watermelons. He put a young watermelon inside a glass box which had a hole so that the wine can pass through. The watermelon grew into the shape of the glass box, growing into a sqaure watermelon. These fruits are sold to the rich or fashion freaks in Japan, being mostly sold in Tokyo and Osaka. Each piece of this unusual watermelon is sold at about 10 000 YEN which is approximtely 120 CAD. These square watermelons are made to fit the japanese refrigerators but according to me, not many will even buy it because of the price. Although the price is insanely high, it's very convenient since it dosen't fall down when we cut and it takes up less space because of its shape and size. These watermelons are now grown in Brazil and Great Britain. Few North American farmers have tried this, but it isn't yet popular.

Packaging square watermelons.
According to me, this idea is great but the price isn't. This was made by a farmer to save up space, not to make a business out of it. It is made so that the population of Japan can fit it in their refrigerator, but this is made impossible for many because it cost about 6 times more than a normal watermelon.
